People's Choice flooded with votes

People's Choice flooded with votes
Organisers of the annual Australian Country Music People's Choice Awards have been inundated with votes for the 2014 presentation.
The voting, which closed only a few weeks ago, has been the strongest in the Awards' 14-year history with well over 90,000 individual votes cast for hundreds of different artists, groups, songs, albums, videos, radio presenters, stations and/or programs.
"We've been working on validating, sorting and counting the votes since the voting closed," said Bob Kirchner, spokesman for the Country Music Bulletin, organisers of the scheme that provides a means for members of the public to vote for their favourites.
"Normally we would have announced our finalists by now," Bob said, "but we will need to work through some of the Christmas/New Year break to make sure everything is right."
He said it was expected finalists would now be announced on or near New Year's Day.
"To say we are delighted with this result is an understatement," Bob said. "And what a great reflection this is on the country music industry. For so many people to take the time to reflect on and vote for their favourites tells me the grassroots support for country music in Australia is huge.
"It also speaks volumes for the work artists are putting in on the ground, recording, touring and promoting their music.
"Not to forget Australia's hard-working broadcasting sector, too," Bob said. "Dozens and dozens of individuals and stations are recognised through the People's Choice Awards scheme for what they do in bringing the music to the people and supporting our artists."
The Australian Country Music People's Choice Awards, sponsored by the Trans-Help Foundation, recognises finalists and winners in 11 categories and will be staged in Country Music Capital's Capitol Theatre at 10am on Wednesday, January 22.

The Burrito Brothers

                                 The Burrito Brothers

A significant chapter in The Flying Burrito Brothers history began in 1979, when Kleinow, Gilbeau, and Battin reunited under the name Burrito Brothers, and added vocalist and multi-instrumentalist John Beland to the lineup. Beland and Guilbeau had been bandmates in Swampwater (a pioneering country-rock band in its own right) a decade earlier, and the old chemistry between the two really clicked. This lineup recorded two full-length albums for the Curb label, and scored several minor hit singles on the country charts.

1982's Sunset Sundown consists of mellow mainstream country music, and is well done on that level. Beland and Guilbeau did most of the writing on both albums, and the results are impressive. The music of these Burrito Brothers was certainly more commercial than that of the original Parsons-Hillman combo

I Can't Stop Loving You: The Songs of Don Gibson
New cc  Date: November 11, 2013: I cant`t stop loving you::The Songs of Don Gibson

Born Amanda Carol Barnett, she was the only child of Betty and Dan Barnett (who worked respectively as a bookkeeper and contractor). Barnett began her musical career by singing in church at the age of five. Her mother encouraged her by booking singing engagements wherever people would listen: bowling alleys, VFW halls and political rallies (notably for Lamar Alexander and future Vice President Al Gore, Jr.). When there was no venue, she would perform in parking lots. By age nine, her father financed a professionally recorded gospel music album. The following summer, she had joined a summer theatre cast at Dollywood and shared the stage with Dolly Parton herself. It was during her two years at Dollywood that she won a talent contest that included making a demo in Nashville.tt!"

Don Gibson would be proud!. With the help of Allison Krause doing background vocals .. and Charlie McKoy on harmonica ... this tune will Become a tune that you will hum all day! ANOTHER stunning version of "I'd Be A Legend In My Time" will bring you two tears .. In a good way .. Mandy takes EACH tune in this CD and makes it here own.A Difficult task with tunes we've heard for years!. EVEN with the Familiar ones like "I Can not Stop Loving You" and "Oh Lonesome Me" you feel like you are hearing them for the first time! .. Also she has chosen several tunes that Don Gibson wrote that were unfamiliar to me .. making this one of the BEST country music CD's this year.

Merle Haggard - Country, Western, Outlaw Country, Bakersfield Sound Music

Merle Haggard - Country, Western, Outlaw Country, Bakersfield Sound Music
Merle Ronald Haggard (born April 6, 1937) is an American country and Western song writer, singer, guitarist, fiddler, and instrumentalist. Along with Buck Owens, Haggard and his band The Strangers helped create the Bakersfield sound, which is characterized by the unique twang of Fender Telecaster and the unique mix with the traditional country steel guitar sound, new vocal harmony styles in which the words are minimal, and a rough edge not heard on the more polished Nashville Sound recordings of the same era. By the 1970s, Haggard was aligned with the growing outlaw country movement, and has continued to release successful albums through the 1990s and into the 2000s. In 1994, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. In 1997, he was inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame

Early life

Haggard's parents, James Francis and Flossie Mae, moved to California from their home in Checotah, Oklahoma, during the Great Depression, after their barn burned in 1934.[3] They settled with their children, Lowell and Lillian, in an apartment in Bakersfield, while James Francis Haggard started working for the Santa Fe Railroad. A woman who owned a boxcar, which was placed in Oildale, a nearby town north of Bakersfield, asked Haggard's father about the possibility of converting it into a house. He reformed the boxcar, and soon after moved in, also purchasing the lot, where Merle Ronald Haggard was born on April 6, 1937.[4][5] The property was eventually expanded by building a bathroom, a second bedroom, a kitchen and a breakfast nook in the adjacent lot.[4]
His father died of a brain hemorrhage in 1945,[5] an event that deeply affected Haggard during his childhood, and the rest of his life. To support the family, his mother worked as a bookkeeper.[6] His brother, Lowell, gave Haggard his used guitar as a gift when he was 12-years-old. Haggard learned to play alone,[4] with the records he had at home, influenced by Bob Wills, Lefty Frizzell and Hank Williams.[7] As his mother was absent due to work, Haggard became progressively rebellious. His mother sent him for a weekend to a juvenile detention center to change his attitude, which worsened.[8]
Haggard committed a number of minor offences, such as thefts and writing bad checks. He was sent to a juvenile detention center for shoplifting in 1950.[9] When he was 14, Haggard ran away to Texas with his friend Bob Teague.[7] He rode freight trains and hitchhiked throughout the state.[10][11] When he returned the same year, he and his friend were arrested for robbery. Haggard and Teague were released when the real robbers were found. Haggard was later sent to the juvenile detention center, from which he and his friend escaped again to Modesto, California. He worked a series of laborer jobs, including driving a potato truck, being a short order cook, a hay pitcher, and an oil well shooter.[10] He debut performance was with Teague in a bar named "Fun Center," being paid US$5, with free beer. He returned to Bakersfield in 1951, and was again arrested for truancy and petty larceny and sent to a juvenile detention center. After another escape, he was sent to the Preston School of Industry, a high-security installation. He was released 15 months later, but was sent back after beating a local boy during a burglary attempt. After his release, Haggard and Teague saw Lefty Frizzell in concert. After hearing Haggard sing along to his songs backstage, Frizzell refused to sing unless Haggard would be allowed to sing first. He sang songs that were well received by the audience. Due to the positive reception, Haggard decided to pursue a career in music. While working as a farmer or in oil fields, he played in nightclubs. He eventually landed a spot on the local television show Chuck Wagon, in 1956.[7]
Married and plagued by financial issues,[7] he was arrested in 1957 shortly after he tried to rob a Bakersfield roadhouse.[12] He was sent to Bakersfield Jail,[6] and was later transferred after an escape attempt to San Quentin Prison, on February 21, 1958.[13] While in prison, Haggard discovered that his wife was expecting a child from another man, which pressed him psychologically. He was fired from a series of prison jobs, and planned to escape along with another inmate nicknamed "Rabbit". Haggard was convinced not to escape by fellow inmates.[14] Haggard started to run a gambling and brewing racket with his cellmate. After he was caught drunk, he was sent for a week to solitary confinement where he encountered Caryl Chessman, an author and death row inmate.[15] Meanwhile, "Rabbit" had successfully escaped, only to shoot a police officer and return to San Quentin for execution.[14] Chessman's predicament, along with the execution of "Rabbit" inspired Haggard to turn his life around.[15] Haggard soon earned a high school equivalency diploma and kept a steady job in the prison's textile plant,[15] while also playing for the prison's country music band,[16] attributing a 1958 performance by Johnny Cash at the prison as his main inspiration to join it.[17] Upon his release in 1960, Haggard said it took about four months to get used to being out of the penitentiary and that, at times, he actually wanted to go back in. He said it was the loneliest he had ever felt.[citation needed]

Country success

Haggard depicted on a publicity portrait for Tally Records
Upon his release, Haggard started digging ditches and wiring houses for his brother. Soon he was performing again, and later began recording with Tally Records. The Bakersfield Sound was developing in the area as a reaction against the over-produced honky tonk of the Nashville Sound. Haggard's first song was "Skid Row". In 1962, Haggard wound up performing at a Wynn Stewart show in Las Vegas and heard Wynn's "Sing a Sad Song". He asked for permission to record it, and the resulting single was a national hit in 1964. The following year he had his first national top ten record with "(My Friends Are Gonna Be) Strangers", written by Liz Anderson (mother of country singer Lynn Anderson) and his career was off and running. In 1966, Haggard recorded his first number-one song "I'm a Lonesome Fugitive", also written by Liz Anderson, which Haggard acknowledges in his autobiography remains his most popular number with audiences.
In 1968, Haggard's first tribute LP Same Train, Different Time: A Tribute to Jimmie Rodgers, was released to acclaim. "Okie From Muskogee", 1969's apparent political statement, was, according to some Merle Haggard interviews decades later, actually written as an abjectly humorous character portrait. In one such interview, Haggard called the song a "documentation of the uneducated that lived in America at the time."[18] However, he said later on the Bob Edwards Show that "I wrote it when I recently got out of the joint. I knew what it was like to lose my freedom, and I was getting really mad at these protesters. They didn't know anything more about the war in Vietnam than I did. I thought how my dad, who was from Oklahoma, would have felt. I felt I knew how those boys fighting in Vietnam felt."
Later, Alabama Gov. George Wallace asked Haggard for an endorsement, which Haggard declined. However, Haggard has expressed sympathy with the "parochial" way of life expressed in "Okie" and songs such as "The Fightin' Side of Me". After "Okie" was released, it was a hit.
Regardless of exactly how they were intended, "Okie From Muskogee", "The Fightin' Side of Me", and "I Wonder If They Think of Me" were hailed as anthems of the so-called "Silent Majority" and presaged a trend in patriotic songs that would reappear years later with Charlie Daniels' "In America", Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA", and others. In 1969 the Grateful Dead began performing Haggard's tune "Mama Tried", which appeared on their 1971 eponymous live album. The song became a staple in their repertoire until the band's end in 1995. The Grateful Dead also performed Haggard's "Sing Me Back Home" numerous times between 1971 and 1973. In addition, The Flying Burrito Brothers recorded and performed "White Line Fever" in 1971, and toured with "Sing Me Back Home" and "Hungry Eyes". Singer-activist Joan Baez, whose political leanings could not be more different from those expressed in Haggard's above-referenced songs, nonetheless covered "Sing Me Back Home" and "Mama Tried" in 1969. The Everly Brothers also used both songs in their 1968 country-rock album Roots. Haggard's next LP was A Tribute to the Best Damn Fiddle Player in the World, which helped spark a permanent revival and expanded audience for western swing.
Haggard in 1975
On Tuesday, March 14, 1972, shortly after "Carolyn" became another number one country hit for Haggard, then-California governor Ronald Reagan granted Haggard a full pardon for his past crimes. During the early to mid-1970s, Haggard's chart domination continued with songs like "Someday We'll Look Back", "Carolyn", "Grandma Harp", "Always Wanting You", and "The Roots of My Raising". He also wrote and performed the theme song to the television series Movin' On, which in 1975 gave him another number one country hit. The 1973 recession anthem "If We Make It Through December" furthered Haggard's status as a champion of the working class. Haggard appeared on the cover of TIME on May 6, 1974.
In the fall of 1972, "Let Me Tell You about A Song," the first TV special starring Merle Haggard, was nationally-syndicated by Capital Cities TV Productions. It was a semi-autobiographical, musical profile of Haggard, akin to the contemporary "Behind The Music," produced and directed by Michael Davis.
In 1981, Haggard published an autobiography, Sing Me Back Home. That same year, he alternately spoke and sang the ballad The Man in the Mask. Written by Dean Pitchford (whose other output includes Fame, Footloose, Sing, Solid Gold and the musical Carrie), this was the combined narration/theme from the movie The Legend of the Lone Ranger...which was a box-office flop.
Country star Willie Nelson believed the 1983 Academy Award-winning film Tender Mercies, about the life of fictional singer Mac Sledge, was based on the life of Merle Haggard. Actor Robert Duvall and other filmmakers denied this and claimed the character was based on nobody in particular. Duvall, however, said he was a big fan of Haggard.[19]
If We Make It Through December turned out to be Haggard's last pop hit. Although he won a Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance for his 1984 remake of That's The Way Love Goes, newer singers had begun to take over country music, and singers like George Strait and Randy Travis had taken over the charts. Haggard's last number one hit was "Twinkle, Twinkle Lucky Star" from his smash album Chill Factor in 1988.[citation needed]
In 1989, Haggard recorded a song, "Me and Crippled Soldiers Give a Damn", in response to the Supreme Court's decision to allow flag burning under the First Amendment. After CBS Records Nashville avoided releasing the song, Haggard bought his way out of the contract and signed with Curb Records, which was willing to release the song. Of the situation, Haggard commented, "I've never been a guy that can do what people told me...It's always been my nature to fight the system."[20]

                                                 Country / Rock Music
Kenneth Ray "Kenny" Rogers (born August 21, 1938, in Houston, Texas) is an American country music singer-songwriter, photographer, record producer, actor and entrepreneur. He has been very successful, charting more than 70 hit singles across various music genres and topping the country and pop album charts for more than 420 individual weeks in the United States alone. Two of his albums, The Gambler and Kenny, are featured in the About.com poll of "The 200 Most Influential Country Albums Ever". He was voted the "Favorite Singer of All-Time" in a 1986 joint poll by readers of both USA Today and People. He has received hundreds of awards for both his music and charity work. These include AMAs, Grammys, ACMs and CMAs, as well as a lifetime achievement award for a career spanning six decades in 2003. Success in recent years include the 2006 album release, Water & Bridges, an across the board hit, that peaked at #5 in the Billboard Country Albums sales charts, also charting high in the Billboard 200. The first single from the album, "I Can't Unlove You," was also a chart hit. Remaining a popular entertainer around the world, the following year he completed a tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland telling BBC Radio 2 DJ Steve Wright, his favorite hit of his was "The Gambler"

The First Edition: The First Edition (later known as Kenny Rogers and the First Edition) was a country music/rock band stalwart members being Kenny Rogers (vocals & bass guitar), Mickey Jones (drums & percussion) and Terry Williams (guitar & vocals). The band formed in 1967, with noted folk musician Mike Settle (guitar and vocals) and the operatically trained Thelma Camacho completing the lineup. The First Edition signed with Reprise Records and recorded the pop-psychedelic single "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)". Within a year, the group was billed as "Kenny Rogers and the First Edition" and in the summer of 1969, they once again hit the charts with "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town" (US #6, UK#2). For the next six years, the First Edition bounced between country, pop and mild psychedelia, enjoying worldwide success.

Jonathan Parker - They'll Never Play My Songs In Nashville 2013

Jonathan Parker - They'll Never Play My Songs In Nashville 2013

Jonathan Parker & The Bel-Airs, are a no apologies, traditional, country/honkytonk band from deep in the moonshining swamps of Johnston County NC. Jonathan Parker began his trek in the music business 13 years ago in the rock/alternative world with his heavy rock band, The Cardinal Effect. After extensive touring in support of their tribunal records, debut LP, the group disbanded and went their separate ways. A hard hitting rock bottom, following a long battle with drug addiction, led Parker back down the path he'd always dreamed of. With hopes of someday being able to write, record, and tour with his own brand of traditional country music, he started piecing together a "strictly traditional" country band. Later forming what is now known as his band, The Bel-Airs: Jonathan Parker on Lead Vocals and Acoustic Guitar, Kelly Allen on Lead Guitar, Danny Kelly on Drums, Jimmy Mitchell on Bass Guitar and Backing Vocals, and the legendary Clyde Mattocks on Pedal Steel Guitar. After constructing a collection of original material and several honkytonk gigs under their belt, the band have finally made plans to release their debut LP, "They'll Never Play My Songs In Nashville", in the spring of 2013. In a world of watered down BS, force fed by today's radio, Jonathan Parker & The Bel-Airs are certainly a breath of fresh air to any traditional country/honkytonk fan! For fans of : Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Vern Gosdin

GEORGE DUCAS -- 4340

GEORGE DUCAS  -- 4340

CDArtwork(4340) sm

George Ducas celebrates the release of 4340 (from Loud Ranch), his first full-length release since his critically acclaimed Capitol Records releases. The new project is signatured as another George Ducas Original trademarked by his contemporary edge and timeless content. The 12-song CD is scheduled for an October 29, 2013 release.

Without exception, 4340 showcases Ducas’ talents to illuminate storylines with defining imagery that brings lyrics to life. With co-writes alongside Keifer Thompson (Thompson Square), Jim Beavers (“Red Solo Cup”/Toby Keith, “5150”/Dierks Bentley), Radney Foster, Jon Henderson and Jason Matthews, the album is stocked with radio worthy tracks and lined with carefully painted musical canvasses featuring song titles such as “CowTown” (at country radio now), “Ain’t That Crazy,” “Love Struck,” “Amnesia,” “Give Me Back My Honky Tonk” “White Lines And Road Signs” and “I Need To Love You.”

Since making his entry in the country music genre as a deep-rooted traditionalist and defined vocalist who brought a contemporary edge to the format, George enjoyed success as a Nashville major label recording artist (Capitol Nashville) with a string of hits including his Top 10 single "Lipstick Promises.”

With a noticeable personal “presence missed” on mainstream radio in recent years, it is only the sound of his voice that was silent in the interim. Holding his position as a relevant member of the songwriting community and a mainstay in the recording industry, Ducas’ musical compositions have been recognized by his peers and heard loud and clear over the airwaves. His reputation as masterful tunesmith has made him a sought-after songcrafter in a league of his own; Ducas is indeed the essence of "musicianship."

In line with his own recording credits, Ducas’ name can be found behind the pen of some of country music's biggest hits including: Sara Evan's No. 1 "Real Fine Place To Start," Josh Thompson's "Won't Be Lonely Long," The Eli Young Band's "Always The Love Songs" as well as cuts recorded by George Jones, The Dixie Chicks, Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood and the Randy Rogers Band, only to name a few.

"I’m really just a ‘regular Joe;’ I enjoy writing a good song, a hot cup of coffee, a cold beer and rolling down highway miles with the band to bring the music to the folks who want to hear it, night after night." Ducas introduces. “I’ve had good fortune to become the voice for other artists and in the meantime, I am blessed to have become a dad—twice George released the debut single "CowTown" (written by Ducas and Jim Beavers) introducing it first to the folks in his home state; the track received overwhelming welcome in the Lone Star state (climbing into the Top 10 on the Texas Music Charts). The sure-fire hit is currently enjoying "want more" applause from country radio and its listeners new and old. [Spin Doctors Promotions-Nashville is spearheading the radio promotion effort.]

“I’m not a ‘newbie’ in the industry by any means, but I’m okay with being recognized as a new artist by the industry and fans; we all need to reinvent ourselves to stay current. I want this project to stand on its own two feet, it's not a departure of where I've been, or who I am, but an example of how I’ve grown," Ducas expands.

A ‘snapshot’ from a musical perspective, 4340 is bits and pieces of my personal relationships, growth and downfalls and because we all experience similar feelings, I think my music relates to many. That's what a good song does; it just expresses feelings about experiences and the story behind them. This time, I'm using my voice to tell it."

Ducas is set to embark on the third-leg of his radio promotion tour—heading to the West Coast. The CD will be distributed by Select-O-Hits and available via all major Internet retail outlets including Amazon, iTunes and Rhapsody.

Garth Brooks

It's been way too long since Garth Brooks sent a new song to country radio stations . Just more than five years when he released " Midnight Sun " in 2008. So I'd say the world is very, very ready for new music .
Brooks publican industry publication Country AIRCHECK all about when and if new stuff will be part of the 2014 comeback. He just sent his duet with his wife Trisha Yearwood " The Call " to radio, so he talked about why that song is so special two heavens .
"It's about that point in a relationship when you make the decision Whether what you have is worth fighting for , or is it just Easier to call it ' friends ' and live life from there , " Brooks said. " Everybody goes through this , Miss Yearwood and I were in the middle of it in 2002-03 . " The version playing on the radio now is just Brooks and Yearwood . Intentionally . There's no big band behind them .
"We tried cutting this song with a full band but kept going back to the Wynn performance where it's just like two people talking to each other . The echo -type piece in this is something I have not seen since ' Mockingbird ' with James Taylor and Carly Simon , "he said. "I love how unique this song sounds and when you bring it down to just two voices and a guitar , the conversation happens . "

Brandy Clark - 12 Stories 2013

12 Stories, Brandy’s debut album as an artist, is full of diverse characters. There’s the woman in first single “Stripes” who fantasizes about killing her cheating husband, but doesn’t want to be caught dead in an orange jumpsuit. There’s another who asks Jesus for help, but plays the lottery just in case in “Pray to Jesus.” And there’s the bored housewife in “Get High” who escapes daily drudgery by rolling joints at the kitchen table.

“I get my inspiration from real people who are just surviving their life and getting through their day. That’s who I write songs for,” explains Brandy. “I want to write songs for somebody who is working at a bank—if that person could write a song, what they would write. That’s my goal.”

Prior to 12 Stories, Brandy achieved that goal by penning songs for other artists. Reba McEntire and Kenny Rogers have both recorded her songs. Darius Rucker, Sheryl Crow and Kacey Musgraves have Brandy compositions on their new albums. And The Band Perry gave Brandy her first No. 1 single with “Better Dig Two,” followed shortly after by another No. 1 in “Mama’s Broken Heart,” cut by Miranda Lambert.

Kristy

After a year based in the United States, Kristy Cox is returning to Australia for a special show at the 2014 Tamworth Country Music Festival to showcase tracks from her forthcoming album Living For The Moment .
The album is due for world-wide release on February 18 through US bluegrass label Pisgah Ridge and is described as "a perfect representation of where this talented singer/songwriter is in her personal and professional life".
First single from the album – One Heartbreak Away – hit the airwaves earlier this month.
Kristy's career has been going from strength to strength since the release of her debut album From My Eyes in 2006. She has had a string of top 10 hits on country radio and country music television and has been recognised as a rising star of Australian country.
In her career so far, she has been a Star Maker finalist and APRA Professional Development Award finalist and her subsequent albums – Breaking New Ground (2010) and Miles And Timezones (2012) have all earned her praise for her songwriting capabilities.
Signing to Pisgah Ridge (an imprint of Mountain Home) in the US was a huge coup for the songstress and saw her move to the States for most of 2013 to work on the new album. She also signed an exclusive songwriting contract with Asheville Forest Music.
Picking One Heartbreak Away as the first single from the new album was an easy decision, Kristy said: "It's a great up-tempo bluegrass track about a relationship that's worth keeping, but that some things need to change. The song is a great reflection of where the album heads musically and how it expands on the bluegrass influences of my previous projects."
The album is a mixture of self-penned and chosen material and is an apt representation of where Kristy is heading musically, according to a spokesman for the artist.
